Look through any collection of iced-out watches and three stone names come up again and again: cubic zirconia, moissanite, and lab-grown diamond. All three are made in a lab. All three can flood a bezel with light. And all three are real materials with real differences — in how they sparkle, how they wear, and what they cost.
This comparison covers those differences without the jargon: brilliance and fire, hardness on the Mohs scale, how each stone is actually produced, and what each one adds to the price of a finished watch. The three stones at a glance

Brilliance and fire: how each stone handles light
Two numbers decide how a stone sparkles. Refractive index measures how strongly it bends light back at you — that is brilliance, the white flash. Dispersion measures how much it splits light into color — that is fire, the rainbow flash.
Lab diamond has a refractive index of 2.42 and dispersion of 0.044. Moissanite comes in higher on both: a refractive index around 2.65 and dispersion of 0.104 — more than double the fire of diamond. Cubic zirconia sits at a refractive index around 2.16 with dispersion of roughly 0.060.
On the wrist, that means moissanite is the flashiest of the three. Under direct light it throws visible rainbow sparks; most people love the effect, a few find it louder than diamond’s cooler white flash. CZ sits closer to diamond in character — clean white light — just with somewhat less intensity, because its refractive index is lower.
One thing matters specifically for watches: bust-down dials and bezels use small pavé stones, often one to two millimeters across. At those sizes the optical gaps narrow. A well-cut CZ and a moissanite at 1.5 mm both read as a field of light across a flooded case. The differences show most in larger stones — a bezel with bigger rounds, or a watch stacked with a tennis chain.
Hardness: what the Mohs scale means on your wrist
The Mohs scale ranks scratch resistance from 1 (talc) to 10 (diamond). Lab diamond scores 10, moissanite 9.25, and cubic zirconia between 8 and 8.5.
Here is why that matters day to day: ordinary household dust contains quartz, which sits at 7 on the scale. Any stone harder than 7 resists most casual abrasion, so none of these three will scratch from normal wear. The margin shows over years, not weeks. CZ, at 8–8.5, can slowly collect micro-abrasions and lose a little of its edge after years of hard use. Moissanite, at 9.25, is harder than almost anything it will ever meet and stays crisp effectively indefinitely. Diamond, at 10, is the ceiling.
CZ has one more quirk worth naming: it is slightly more prone to picking up a film from skin oils, which reads as cloudiness. That is not damage — warm water, a drop of dish soap, and a soft brush bring the sparkle back in a couple of minutes. It is a maintenance habit rather than a flaw, but it is an honest difference between the stones.
How each stone is made
Cubic zirconia
CZ is zirconium dioxide, melted at around 2,750 °C using a technique called skull crucible melting and grown commercially since the 1970s. The crystals are cut and faceted like any gemstone. Because the raw material is inexpensive and growth is fast, finished stones cost very little — which is exactly what makes a fully flooded watch affordable.
Moissanite
Moissanite is silicon carbide. It exists in nature only in traces — first identified by the chemist Henri Moissan in 1893, in fragments from a meteor crater — so effectively every gem-grade moissanite is grown in a lab, as crystals formed under controlled high heat. Growth is slower and harder to do well than CZ, which is most of the reason it costs more.
Lab-grown diamond
Lab diamonds are carbon, grown either under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) or by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The result is chemically and optically identical to a mined diamond — same hardness, same sparkle, same grading scales. What the lab removes is the mining, not the price tag: growing diamond is still slow and energy-intensive, and it remains far and away the most expensive of the three.
Price: what each stone does to the cost of a watch
Rough orders of magnitude, per stone: cubic zirconia costs cents to a few dollars. Moissanite runs a meaningful multiple of that. Lab diamond costs many multiples again — even as prices have fallen, small pavé diamonds add up quickly.
Now consider what an iced-out watch actually is: a fully flooded case, dial, and bracelet can carry several hundred stones, each one cut, sorted, and set. Multiply any per-stone price by four hundred and small differences become large ones. That math is why the same style of watch can exist at under a hundred dollars in CZ, in the hundreds in moissanite, and in the thousands flooded with lab diamonds.
None of those price points is a trick. They are the same design carrying three different materials, and the honest question is simply which trade-off fits how you will wear it.

Which should you buy? An honest answer
Buy cubic zirconia if this is your first iced-out piece, you like rotating styles, or the budget is the budget. At pavé sizes it looks the part, and nobody across the room is grading your stones. Clean it now and then and it will keep working for you.
Buy moissanite if the watch will be a daily wearer for years. It is the hardest-wearing stone you can get without diamond pricing, it never clouds, and it actually out-sparkles diamond on fire. For one watch worn hard, it is the sweet spot — which is why we built a dedicated moissanite collection.
Buy lab diamond if you want a diamond — the word, the certificate, the ceiling on hardness — and you are working with a jewelry budget rather than a fashion one. That is a legitimate want. Just be clear about what the extra money buys: at watch-stone sizes it is not visibly more sparkle. It is mostly the name.
